What ekiow said made no sense to me what-so-ever... (way over my head... like "whoosh")
Anyways, if you are talking about cleaning up the scan... remember this:
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTION FOR A CLEAN SCANNER!
Scanners nowadays are pretty cheap, and pretty decent for its price (including the all-in-one type being used by yours truly).
If you are going to scan the book yourself, be sure to fiddle with the setting to find the right balance between size and tone, or you just end up scanning too big, or just plain ugly.
As for the software I use to clean up the scan, balance the color, etc... I use Adobe Photoshop CS4. It doesn't have to be the latest version, as I used version 7 for the longest time before moving onto CS2, then CS4. It lets you join two pages, mend the separated edges, reconstruct the segment lost by the words tacked on top of it, etc... It is not very novice friendly program, so be sure to use google to search for answers, and remember, practice, practice, and PRACTICE!
I know, I'm not very good at it either, but enough to edit few chapters here and there, and clean up all the scans I have created (like earlier chapters of Umi no Misaki v3 tankobon).
Gari uses different program, though... Fireworks or something.

but the most of the great manga are only on japane or english so i want to translate them into german for people in my country who haven't a good english knowledge. but i have a few questions: how and with which programm do you clean the sites?, i translated a few sites of Akumetsu into german but then i couldn't clean some things so it looked very badly and i stopped. can you help me, please? and tell me what i need to have (programm) and what i have to know.
