Uniform file names

Umi no Misaki

Uniform file names

Postby quirriff on Tue Apr 07, 2009 2:46 pm

I've noticed that the file names of the scanlations of Umi No Misaki are not what you would call uniform. The latest chapter only had numbers in 3 digits followed by the file extension .png

The first volume is like so: misaki_01_XXX.png
the second volume is: 02_XXXpng
The other scans not released in volumes are misakiYY_XX.png in form, and then change....

If you get my point, the naming format changes which makes it difficult for those who want to read chapters consecutively in image/photo viewer applications can't for the very minor reason because they're not in alphabetical-numeral order.

I ask that you make a file name format that is standard for now on (not nessesarily changing the existing file names), so we can have all our Umi no Misaki in one folder.

The filenames of the images themselves are kept basically the same as they are in the raws. The files aren't intended to be unzipped. This is why the zip filenames are uniform, and the image filenames don't matter at all. Any image viewer worth it's weight in salt should be able to read images from within a zip file. I suggest ACDSee (though there are free ones out there if you don't want to pay, or are not keen on piracy). Personally, if I had to use anything other than ACDSee, I wouldn't even read manga at all.

There's plenty of good image viewers out there for sure and some of them read what's inside zips.
But without uniform file names, you can't have an uninterrupted viewing session, after all opening a new zip when you want to view the next one just by pressing PG down or right Arrow, sort of spoils the mood.

PS: I just tried Comix and its a good free open source one, actually written with all the things in mind if you want to read manga with an image viewer.

Well, when these chapters are originally published, there are often weeks in between. They're designed to be read that way. Basically renaming the image files is a pain. And when I used to do it, I would copy and paste the filenames from the previous chapter. And then I would forget to change the chapter number in the filenames and stuff. And in the end, it was a lot of pointless hassle, because most people wouldn't be unzipping them anyway. You could think of us as a chef that prepares food. We serve the meal, and if you want to eat it a certain way, that's up to you. There is always the option of just not reading it at all.

If having file names match up is a big priority for you, I'd suggest you procure yourself a copy of Better File Rename. This utility has saved me a bunch of time over how I used to rename them.

Having matching file names is a high priority for me and I hate when they don't match up, however, it's one of those things that you don't really think much about when you are trying to release a manga chapter. I screw it up all the time here and at my other group.

Quiriff, you could just rename them yourselves, that's what I do for Nana to Kaoru*, easiest way is to number it all 123456...

If changing pages with the arrows or pg down spoils the mood, how do you do it so it doesn't? not sure what you mean there

...*one chapter of which is scanlated by someone we all know and love(in a platonic sort of way) :D

EDIT: Better File Rename sounds like a better suggestion...hmmm time to wikipedia it

i still think its easier to change file names myself, so i can have them in one folder, get folders sorted into the volumes, then chapter 1 would have files named A (taking care of different file types and trying to avoid computer mixing files round as it names them), and chapter 2 would be B and so on, start again at new volume. regardless of what the files are named before it keeps them in line :D , then just cut and paste :P

also saves changing folder when i want to read through stuff again

i use windows photo gallery before someone suggests a much easier way :D, which i am sure there is

----- just noticed that this is the same as boku no's post -----

hmm I too used to change it myself. But aren't you (Gari) used to reorder the filename when you release the 'better' quality for the scanlations? I think I'll wait for it before I start to change it myself :D

BTW, about that Better File Rename, can it used on a Mac? If not, what do you think I should use?

I agree... you need a better FOLDER name...
I recently downloaded your scans for Girls Saurus and Girls Saurus DX....
The FOLDER names are really bad....
I suggest you make a Standard file name for each FOLDER
the images doesn't need to be renamed anymore....

I had to rename each folder to GS-DX Vol.0X
BTW: don't name them TOO long....

No. If you want to rename them, you are free to, but I am going to continue doing things the right way. If you don't like it, stop downloading it.
