World Economic Crisis

A place to discuss anything.

World Economic Crisis

Postby TigerII on Sat Oct 11, 2008 12:20 am

I am sure we all know by now that the Western worlds economy is falling apart. the DOW is falling like stones, banks are tanking, everyone is panicking.

So, how has it affected you? I use to buy a series of books from the United Kingdom, but shipping how tripled, so I no longer can. I am preparing for the time when inflation is at the point that internet, tv, games, etc is for the rich only also.

Hell, this may even affect the manga/anime communities. The majority of translators run on donations. What abotu when no one can give donations anymore. I even worry about our beloved Solaris.

So, this is a discussion about anything and everything regarding the failing economy.

You should know that the East is also in trouble countries like Pakistan, China, Japan , Singpore and South Korea are affected as well, anyways,

Well, if memory serves me correctly, the Business Cycle goes as follows:
Prosperity, Peak Stage, Recession, Depression, The Trough Stage, Recovery and back to prosperity.

So it was bound to happen sooner or later, we've been too lucky for too long,

As a Canadian and a cheapass I haven't been affected that much(yet), but if the US falls, Canada will fall as well(like in the Great Depression of the '30s) :(
the world has become more and more dependent on one another so...we're screwed

They say 2012 is the end of the world or when humans reach a new age of enlightenment,so this is only the beginning if you believe that.

But as a person who's optimistic in nature, I think we'll pull through(my only worry is that I'll become bitter, resentful and right wing)

...and who can say where the wind blows, where world goes, only time.......

I think there is no doubt that things are going to change... But I'm used to living on a tight budget

hee hee i made a fair amount of money investing in silver and gold back in 04 when it was $6 and $400 and sold some when it peaked at $22 and $1200 last year, waiting for silver to drop below the $10 before i buy more and sell it next time its around $18. also made some profit selling the american money i bought last summer when it was $.80cad for $1usd and sold for $1.15cad in november. bloody PM market i use has a 27% spread (greedy bastards) so i really have to be smart about when i buy/sell.
but i really should get a real job...

From what i've read, the economic infrastructure is really outdated, and wasn't made for the 21st century economy. It's like having a energy grid in the 40s trying to supply all the demands of today - bound to crash.

while the market is a bull/bear market, flucations of this magnitude on the global scale isn't exactly "normal".

as a student, i think today's world is pretty bull. back in the days, if u get a uni degree then u're set for life. now, even if you have a masters there's no guarentee for a good job.

Japan has been stuck in stagflation for last 20 years or so, and that hasn't dampened their crazy pace of pumping out manga. I don't see any foreseeable changes in their manga pace (or their economy for that matter). I just hope this downturn doesn't affect me much in finding a permanent full time job so that I can afford to hang around in this group for few more years.
