Why have you banned Chatzilla?

Why have you banned Chatzilla?

Postby JackBassV on Tue Aug 04, 2009 11:23 am

This is a serious question Vinny.

I hate mirc (too many options for the little I use irc).

You allow irchighways new webchat, but chatzilla gets unceremoniously banned. Why? I remember the early versions had the occasional problem, but I've been using it for a couple of years with very few problems (other than dl'ing from some mirc servers).

thx for all the manga I leach from you^_^

And this is a serious answer JackBassV (no pun intended).
I have once banned all chatzilla users for about a year or so after finding out that they seem to ignore rules more so than the rest of users in IRC (pacbell ISP users notwithstanding). Although it was going to be a permanent ban, Gari persuaded me to think otherwise, and the ban was dropped for few months until few days ago.
I am finding out that same problem which led to the first ban persists, and unless I can get some kind of assurances from chatzilla users, I have no motivation to remove this ban.
I understand that the vast majorities follow the rules well enough, but I am not going to chase after each and every of them everytime they disregard the rules.
I may remove the ban in few days, but expect it to become a permanent ban if this trend continues.
Perhaps you might want to seek out different IRC client (other than mIRC).

Also regarding mirc, "options" are named such for a reason. You don't have to use them. They're optional.

The word seem is telling. Do Chatzilla users really break the rules more, or just seem to? After all, there are thousands of mirc users for every chatzilla user, so wouldn't there be more mirc rule breakers than chatzilla ones? Even if Chatzilla users break the rules more, could it be a problem with chatzilla itself, rather than the users? I know that Chatzilla has problems downloading when I have torrents running.

And if 90% of users who broke the rules were Canadian, would you ban all Canadians? 50%? 25%? What would be the cut off? Anyway, wouldn't an auto kick/ban system be a better solution. Most places I visit ban the use of Find. Use it and get kick/banned for at least 5 minutes. DL speed drops below 5kb/s? No dl for 30 minutes. If the problem is something else (swapping raws, porn, etc), ban the user.

Oh well. Even if you do ban chatzilla, I'll just make use of irchighway's webchat package. Looks so like chatzilla, that it could be based on the same source. Now wouldn't that be funny?

There is no scientific method of measuring which groups break rules more often than not. However, I do have some formidable sum of logs I have been keeping for years, and I review the channel daily to see who invoked my ban script, and anything that slipped through. So while my statement might sound inexact at best, I do not believe you can counter me otherwise... besides, I have final saying on bans I place (only person who can override this is Big "G").

JackBassV wrote:And if 90% of users who broke the rules were Canadian, would you ban all Canadians?

Yes, I would. Gari can override ban for himself well enough, so I would not second guess myself on that.

There is no hard cut off line. It just goes, and no, it will not be something as insignificant as 10% or so (not for a permanent ban, anyways).

I do not feel that I should invest more time than I already had with ban script in order to prevent people from rule breaking when simple ban would be more time efficient. Besides, spending less time on those might mean that I have more time hunting/scanning stuffs.

Every channels have their own sets of banned triggers and rules. We have no obligation to conform to their sets of rules unless it is something of "all users banned". Besides, we have our releases made available in the website, so banning someone from downloading in IRC channel would have minimal effect. I wouldn't care about swapping raws and/or porn as long as it is done elsewhere. All I ask is not to mention them in the channel or in forum.

Once again, I have final saying in this matter (other than G), so don't expect me to have a change in heart.

Thanks for the clarification^_^

I know what you mean, as to studying figures for years. You get a feeling of flow in the data. Some things stick out, but you cannot say precisely why. It just does.

Anyway, You're the boss. What you decide is final. It's not as though I lurk on irc that often. Just when the site goes down.

Looking forward to the next release.
