Hard to say. Crunchyroll has become the first real shot at dismantling fansubs in anime industry. However, manga is simply larger in multiple levels to have single source handle all translation/digital distribution. Plus, Japanese publishing industry heavily relies on manga as more than 50% of printed media is manga-related materials. In other words, the idea of all digital distribution to eliminate the analog source suggested by one of the industrial insider is flawed at best. Besides, DRM can be defeated just as well, which makes digital distribution sketchy at this point. Perhaps ebook reader industry might play an accidental role in future of manga industry (and I am dying to buy an ebook reader to read manga, not just books).
Many former scanlators have gone to become productive members in publishing business side of manga, so they are aware of our capability.
Ultimately, it comes down to striking a right balance between publishing a profitable series without alienating the readers. Hence why we prefer to work on series that have low chances of becoming licensed, and drops the series that becomes licensed.
All Rules, No Mercy.
